Womenswear by Alexander Julian c1992

Womenswear by Alexander Julian: launched in 1992 in association with Paul Sebastian.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell liked? It is classified as a delicate fruity floral fragrance for women.
  • Top notes: mandarin, cassis, apricot, peach and plum
  • Middle notes: cyclamen, ylang-ylang, freesia, jasmine, lily of the valley, orchid, narcissus, rose and rosewood.
  • Base notes: sandalwood, vanilla, cedar, oakmoss and white musk

Bottle:

One half ounce of the parfum retailed for $95 in 1993, the high price may have come from the fact that the bottle was made by Fenton. In the magazine ads the bottles look like ancient pottery washed up by the sea and that's exactly the effect marketers at Paul Sebastian wanted to achieve for the packaging of the Womenswear fragrance.

In Fall of 1991, Fenton began working with the Paul Sebastian Company and the designer who originally introduced them to perfume bottle production to develop a line to be marketed under the direction of Alexander Julian. The project included Fenton manufacturing a stock clear glass one-half ounce and one ounce bottle in light blue with an iridized and then satinized surface with a hand painted gold band at the top of the bottle. They also manufactured the stopper that goes in the bottle in a similar treatment. The very expensive combination of colored glass and iridescent treatments was unique to Fenton in the perfume bottle market.

Fate of the Fragrance:

Discontinued, date unknown.

A followup fragrance, Colours was introduced in 1993 and uses the same bottles from the Womenswear line.

Colours for Men was launched in 1994, a floral woody musk fragrance.

Suspiro de Granada by Myrurgia: launched in 1922. The name means "Sigh of Granada".

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as an oriental woody fragrance for women with a heady bouquet of roses and carnations layered over spiced woods and sweet resins.
  • Top notes: spices
  • Middle notes: rose and carnation
  • Base notes: vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, musk, sandalwood

The New Yorker, 1932:

"Myrurgia: A Moi, is new, voluptuous, and fun. They do perfumes that are Spanish without being too much so: Suspiro de Granada (sandalwoody), Tu Reja (carnation), and Joya, to mention only a few."

The Real New York, 1933:

"In their shop you may buy imported Spanish perfume. The latest is "Suspiro de Granada." It comes in four sizes costing from $1.00 to $30.00 a bottle. The fragrance is heavy, sweet and exotic."

The New Yorker, 1944:

"Suspiro de Granada (at L.& T. only) is a rose with more than a hint of carnation."

Bottles:

The perfume was housed in several different bottles, but it was best known for its opaque black glass bottle that was topped by a ball shaped stopper molded with a stylized floral design. Designed by Julian Viard and made by Depinoix.

The perfume was encased in a striking red Bakelite plastic bell shaped case imitating lacquer and handpainted with black and gold flowers, the case is further enhanced with fanciful silk pompons.   The label used on the box was created by artist Eduard Jener.

I believe that the bakelite presentation case was made by Edouard Fornells, as he is famous for his bakelite powder, rouge and vanity containers. The company had important clients with the biggest perfume companies and made boxes and flacons for Bourjois, Worth, D'Orsay, and Roger et Gallet as well as still doing commission work for his friend Lalique.

The designer for the Suspiro de Granada soap box label shown above was the illustrator Eduard Jener.

Senchal by Charles of the Ritz: launched in 1981.  The name is derived from a lake in India.

Undiscouraged by Revlon's 1980 lack of success with its Scoundrel, Charles of the Ritz went after the same younger market in 1981 with Senchal, using heavy advertising. Charles of the Ritz, spent $250,000 and took two and a half years to develop Senchal. Charles of the Ritz spent almost $5 million on network television in the fall of 1981 to launch its second mass market women's fragrance, Senchal.

The ad copy reads: "Senchal was designed for another type of modern woman. This woman was looking for some danger. She wants the passionate, adventurous life. She's a connoisseur of luxury. Men are part of her  life, but she'll have a meaningful relationship with whom she wants, when she wants. The world is her toy, she's queen of the jungle. She's not going to marry the boy next door!"

Cabriole by Elizabeth Arden: launched in 1977. The name stems from a ballet movement consisting of a leap and a turn.

    Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is a soft, delicate aldehydic floral fragrance spiked with sweet smelling spices and green notes over a warm, woodsy base .
    • Top notes: bergamot, peach, red apple, green anise, Indian pineapple, hyacinth, carnation
    • Middle notes: rose, jasmine, magnolia, violet, iris, pimiento, spices
    • Base notes: galbanum, patchouli, Virginia cedar, sandalwood, oakmoss, vetiver, amber, beeswax

    Country Life, 1977:
"Another exciting new fragrance arrived in our midst this month when Elizabeth Arden introduced Cabriole, a liquid bouquet of flowers mixed with the quietly dominant note of spice. Although you may not be able to recognise the scent of all the roses, hyacinth, jasmine and magnolia that went into the perfume, the blended result is a deliciously feminine essence that you can also buy asn an eau de toilette."

    McCall's, 1977:
"Cabriole from Elizabeth Arden— a delicate network of flowers with a rich touch of vetiver and pimiento."

    House Beautiful, Volume 119, 1977:
"Cabriole is Elizabeth Arden's new floral scent, again a marvelous melange of flowers that includes magnolia, carnation, violet and iris. Lest you think that the fragrance is named after a certain style of chair leg, let me explain that you should know of the other definition of the word - the ballet leap that draws applause. Cabriole makes its debut in cologne, more-than-cologne, body lotion and dusting powder, nothing with a big price tag and probably less than a ticket to the ballet."

    New York Magazine, 1978:
"...And here is the fragrance that defines her: a melding of flowers and more flowers, mingled with a fresh flourish of spices. We call it-Cabriole. by Elizabeth Arden. Because there's never been a better, more rewarding time to be a woman."

Miss Dior by Christian Dior c1947

        0
Miss Dior by Christian Dior: launched in 1947. Created by perfumers Jean Carles and Paul Vacher, it met with immediate success.

        The Idea:

Dior put his love of things British to good commercial use and came up with a name, "Miss Dior." after his younger sister, Catherine. The fragrance itself was conceived by Christian and his childhood friend, Serge Heftler-Louiche, whom was a manager for Coty perfumes for twenty five years and owned a perfume distribution company SFD. Dior later made him the director of Parfums Dior.

It was said that Dior held samples under the noses of every woman he knew and they hated it, probably because it was such a unique and strong fragrance for the time. But, Dior was undeterred, he was convinced of the perfume's quality and gave the production the go ahead.

France Actuelle, reported that Dior had only sold exactly 150 bottles of Miss Dior in 1947, but in 1967,  Parfums Dior sold 9,000,000 of its fragrance articles. The book Fashions in the Forties states that "In the first year a small factory of six hands produced 283 bottles (twenty-five years later eleven million bottles were being turned out by the 700 employees of Dior Perfumes Ltd)."

The houndstooth design for the box came a few days later, at Victor Grandpierre's suggestion, inspired by one of the fabrics in the collection.

        Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It was originally classified as an aldehydic chypre fragrance for women made up of 350 different ingredients.
        • Top notes: aldehydes, galbanum, bergamot, clary sage, gardenia
        • Middle notes: celery seed, lily of the valley, neroli, narcissus, carnation, rose de Chêne, jasmine, iris
        • Base notes: labdanum, patchouli, cistus, ambergris, oakmoss, leather, sandalwood, vetiver
        Perfumery: Practice and Principles, 1994:
"Although the central chypre accord of bergamot, jasmine, oakmoss, patchouli, vetiveryl acetate, labdanum and animalic notes comprises some 60% of the formula, the perfume, at the time of its launch, was one of startling originality. The emphasis on green notes was taken up in Miss Dior, combining galbanum with the accord between the aldehydes C11 undecyclenic and C10, with styrallyl acetate, and a styrax notes. In addition there is a dry spicy note based on pepper and coriander, as well as lavender and neroli.
A conventional jasmin base again provides the main floral aspect of the perfume. In more modern versions, for example, as in the Eau de Toilette, Lyral is used to replace part or all of the hydroxycitronellal. The styrax note may be reinforced by the use of phenylpropyl alcohol, one of its major constituents. The base note has a high level of patchouli 10%.
Contrasting with the somewhat harsh top note of the perfume are warm amber and animalic notes, and the powdery softness of orris and vanillin. Natural jasmin and tuberose may be used to give richness to the perfume. A trace of celery seed oil also forms an interesting accord with the tuberose.
At the time when Miss Dior was created most natural tuberose was obtained by the traditional enfleurage process. Today, partly because of high labor cost but also because of the religious restriction on the use of animal fats in producing countries such as India, most tuberose absolutes are obtained by solvent extraction. The two types of product are very different in olfactory character, with the more modern product being greener and lacking much of the “jammy” richness of the original, which was so important in many of the earlier perfumes."

The famous Lux soap of the 1960s had a scent which was influenced by the fragrance of Miss Dior and was a combination of green notes, lavandin, styrall acetate, and the aliphatic aldehydes; a floral character made up of ylang, fruity jasmin notes, and rose; PTBCHA, methyl ionone, and Vertofix; with a mossy amber background.
