    Etoile D'Or by Volnay c2013

Etoile D'Or by Volnay: launched in 2013.  Created by Amelie Bourgeois who was inspired to create a modern interpretation of Etoile D'Or by using one of Volnay's original formulas dating back to the 1920s.

    From Volnay:
"Classified as a floral Oriental perfume, it is irresistible. It is a journey through time. Recreated by respecting the original formula, it takes us back to the 1920s. The focus is to find the Parisian chic of the early century. The Etoile d’Or perfume was designed for powerful people, for men and women of character. This oriental floral, much appreciated by perfumers of the past, is the way to become even more desirable.
Playful and malicious accords, which beyond the singular notes of bergamot and lavender, capture the senses with the sensual and carnal side of spicy oriental. The suede note provides a velvety feel, which adds a new dimension to the sensuality of the fragrance."

    Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral oriental fragrance for women
    • Top notes: Italian bergamot, country lavender
    • Middle notes; Egyptian jasmine, peony, Turkish rose absolute
    • Base notes: Base 4092, Siamese benzoin, tonka bean, oak moss substitute, suede note, musk powder

I received a sample directly from Parfums Volnay and I was eager to try out their fragrances so I immediately applied a spray to my arm. At once, there is a dazzling burst of herbaceous lavender and pungent bergamot. The delightful alchemy of the secret ingredient Base 4092, brings us several notes all at once: powder, vanilla, rose and cloves. A diaphanous cloud of tonka bean, comforting musk, and resinous benzoin enfold me in a luxuriant, powdery embrace as soft as gossamer. Delicate hints of Egyptian jasmine and Turkish rose absolute greet me while gauzy notes of suede and dusty oak moss seamlessly round out the sublime base.

My overall impression is that at first the perfume is very strong and stays that way for about 20 minutes. Some people may find this to be a little too much. But I myself love a potent fragrance. After this fades a bit, a beautiful soft musky and powdery base stays on the skin for hours. A very interesting and original perfume.

Benevolence by House of Sillage c2012

Benevolence by House of Sillage: launched in 2012. Created by acclaimed French perfumer Francis Camail.

    House of Sillage:
"A gift wrapped in the promise of a journey where the sacred essence of love becomes the source of immortality.
    Notes include:
    - Succulent Tunisian bitter almond oil.
    - Fresh and floral Tunisian orange blossom
    - Sensuous Madagascan vanilla

    Benevolence
“Every night before I went to sleep my mother would say to me “Good night, sweet heart, let the angels surround you with their love”. Today my mother says those same words to my children and they feel safe and loved. The memories of my youth resonate with this fragrance. With all the struggles we have each and every day, my hope is that this fragrance gives a feeling of warmth and love.”
    ~ Nicole Mather, Founder CEO"

    Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? Floral, Sweet Vanillic, Powdery. It is classified as an oriental vanilla fragrance for women.
    • Top notes: Tunisian bitter almond oil, bergamot, and star anise
    • Middle notes: Tunisian orange blossom, jasmine, and lavender
    • Base notes; Madagascan vanilla, sugar, and musk

I received a generous sample from Parfumerie Nasreen, who carries the whole line of House of Sillage fragrances, amongst many other rare and hard to find niche scents.

At first sniff, the perfume is very sweet, sugary, almost edible with a muted trace of bergamot.  The orange blossom and jasmine form such an irresistible narcotic alliance that I cannot stop sniffing my wrist. The gauzy dry down was still musky and confectionery. I found this to be very similar in scent to Guerlain's Mon Precieux Nectar, which I am totally enamored of.

In fact the two perfumes share a lot of the same ingredients: both have bitter almond top notes, a fusion of jasmine and orange blossom in the heart and a sensuous base of vanilla and musk. However, while Mon Precieux Nectar is fleeting and remains more of a dreamy skin scent, House of Sillage's Benevolence has better staying power and does rise a bit more off the skin than Mon Precieux Nectar.

As Mon Precieux Nectar is reminiscent of rich honey, Benevolence is pure white sugar, a gentle floral scented candy floss, which I do not find off putting in the least. Though the sweetness was to be had, very little of the lavender and star anise made their acquaintance with me on this day, perhaps in future samplings, they may reveal themselves. My overall impression is that I enjoyed this perfume and would love to have a full sized bottle of it for my wardrobe.

Mon Precieux Nectar is classified as a floral woody musk fragrance for women:
    • Top notes: petitgrain, bitter almond
    • Middle notes: jasmine, orange blossom
    • Base notes: sandalwood, guaiac wood, incense, vanilla, white musk

    Bottles:

Benevolence is available as Extrait de Parfum in a signature 75 ml flacon shaped like a large cupcake. The dome shape top of the bottle (it's frosting) is made of bronze zamac2 and studded with Swarovski crystals for a touch of feminine luxury. The very top of the dome has a small round disc emblazoned with the perfume's name. The fluted glass base mimics the paper cups which would hold the delectable treat, the base is shaded with a peachy yellow to echo the top's color scheme.

Mollie Parnis by Mollie Parnis: launched in 1978 under the name Mollie Parnis Cosmetics Dist., possibly in conjunction with Parfums Weil. The perfume was concocted in France but botted in the USA. She chose tuberose as a main ingredient as it was her favorite flower, one of which she used to keep fresh blossoms in vases in her office.

In a 1977 article, Mollie Parnis mentions that "The French had ideas about perfume, I had some about fashion, we finally agreed...The world is getting more American designer oriented...I believe that creativity, whether it's in the arts or anything else, is where the money is. The money is here, we have the know-how and the creativity. "

    Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a fruity floral chypre fragrance for women. It was described as "piquant and bright."
    • Top notes: galbanum, peach, plum, orange blossom, osmanthus, anise, coriander

    Bottles:

The parfum was housed in a round bottle tied with a velvet bow and encased in a camel colored box. The Mollie Parnis parfum sold for $80 an ounce. An Eau de Parfum was also available in a square glass bottle with a molded disk in the middle emblazoned with the Mollie Parnis name, the neck of the bottle is tied with a velvet bow.

    Fate of the Fragrance:

I believe this was discontinued around 1984. The name was not filed for a trademark renewal in 1985, so this means it was not being reused for manufacture.

    Gone Pink!

As you have noticed, Cleopatra's Boudoir has gone pink for the entire month of October in support and strength for Breast Cancer survivors, patients and their family. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and pink symbolizes hope.

My mother died from cancer at age 50 in 2006, and although she did not pass away from breast cancer, some members of my mother's family have either died or are survivors of breast cancer.

Many cosmetics companies like Avon and Estee Lauder are also lending their hand to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. Please note that in addition to these companies, several retailers are also holding their own events to help out. If you look to the right, you will see some of my advertisers offering discounts and specials on items being sold with a portion of the funds being donated.

Please feel free to visit the American Cancer Society's website on breast cancer to learn more http://www.cancer.org/cancer/breastcancer/index
