Striking full color advertisements for Briggs compacts and vanity cases from a 1927 Huntley & Co. catalog. All of these compacts will have the marking of "DFB Co." I love the elegant chain handles on these, they are perfect for dancing the tango and was the reason for why they are named tango compacts or dance compacts. Each one has beautiful engine turned or enameled details which make them even more attractive. Most are made up of white gold or green gold fill, most have sterling silver tops.

Bakir by Germaine Monteil c1975

$

0
Bakir by Germaine Monteil; launched in 1975. Bakir is the Turkish word for copper, and the packaging used for Monteil's Bakir, copper on deep blue, is unusual and attractive.

"Bakir is an experience. Its top note is a bittersweet blend of herbs from Egypt and Africa, jonquils from Asia. The middle note — the more subtle second wind of a perfume — is an earthy blend of such as wood, moss, spice."
Bakir was originally available in parfum and cologne. Bath perfume and perfumed powder were added to the line in 1976.  In 1978, The "Bakir" and "Royal Secret" lines featured perfume and powder compacts in new portable forms, and cologne pencils in a velvety case.

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a rich and earthy oriental fragrance for women with dominant green and woodsy notes

  • Top notes: orange, aldehydes, jonquil, galbanum, raspberries, labdanum, bergamot and petit grain
  • Middle notes: heliotrope, geranium, lavender, clove, cinnamon, rose, jasmine, orange blossom, ylang ylang, pimento and nutmeg
  • Base notes: cedar, patchouli, benzoin, incense, ambergris, myrrh, musk, sandalwood, oakmoss

Discontinued, date unknown. Still sold in 1984.

Bakir was reformulated and relaunched by Irma Shorell, Inc.

Cosmopolitan, 1975:
"The sensual East . . . exotic, heady, lush, mysterious . . . inspired Germaine Monteil's Bakir fragrance. Deep, earthy tones mingle with the most potent of perfume oils, the sweetest of flower scents. Result is very-pow! (Definitely not for the faint of heart) One ounce $60."

Vallee des Rois by Mira Takla c1988

    $

    0
Vallee des Rois by Mira Takla: launched in 1988. The name means "Valley of the Kings" in French. Created by British Egyptologist Mira Takla as an approximation of the perfume that the ancient pharaoh Cleopatra herself wore containing 90% of ingredients used in Ancient Egypt. It was sold exclusively at the perfume hall in Harrod's department store in England and the Galeries Lafayette in Paris.

Continuing the Egyptian theme, the bottles, created by Pochet et du Courval, are a beautiful shade of teal blue and are decorated with ancient Egyptian motifs. The footed demilune parfum flacons are adorned with a gilded metal collar with painted jewels. The elliptical bottle for the eau de parfum is circled by a gilded belly chain printed onto the glass, while a smaller, 7.5ml purse size bottle of the eau de parfum is a spiral shape. The eau de toilette bottle is molded with a lotus blossom design and features a gilded metal frieze of stylized lotus blossoms at the top. The rarest bottle of all is the factice, the 9" tall display bottle, which contained no scent at all, but had two glass bead necklaces wrapped around the neck.

The fragrances are packaged in stunning turquoise blue boxes printed with a repeating pattern of the same stylized lotus and papyrus plants as the ones molded into the eau de toilette bottle.

    Egyptian Archaeology, 1991:
"A unique perfume at once combining the mystery and opulence of ancient Egypt with the chic elegance of an haute couture French perfume. Vallee des Rois is the creation of Mira Takla - sophisticated, intelligent, born and raised in Cairo.."

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral oriental fragrance for women with a mixed floral bouquet layered over a woody, resinous and powdery drydown.

    • Top notes: fruits, green notes, citruses
    • Middle notes:rose, jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose, ylang-ylang
    • Base notes: benzoin, heliotrope, labdanum, patchouli, sandalwood, styrax, tonka bean, vanilla, vetiver, frankincense
    Discontinued, date unknown.

In 2008, Boots Pharmacy resurrected the old house of A. Girard.

    They released several perfumes:

Bouquet d'Orient and Lysval are reinterpretations of original formulas.

Bouquet d'Orient evokes "the hustle and bustle of pre-war Shanghai, with a rich and spicy amber oriental fragrance. Bouquet D'Orient opens with top notes of Neroli, Bergamot and Lemon, which give way to a floral heart of Bulgarian Rose, Ylang Ylang, Mimosa, Orris, Cassie, and French Violet Leaves. All this rests on a warm resinous melange of Madagascan Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Benzoin and Myrhh, with just a hint of Patchouli.

Lysval is  a deliciously layered fragrance updating a classic vintage recipe, Lysval incorporates some of the richest floral essences in the world to instantly evoke the richness and tranquillity of the perfect English garden. Perfume description:  A cascade of flowers, including Ylang Ylang, Indian Jasmine, Rose Petals and Orange Blosson are supported by a beautifully powdery French Orris, Benzoin Siam and warm rich Sandalwood. A particularly French base combining Jacinthe Fleurs and Muguet contributes to a fresh Spring floralcy of Hyacinths, Lily-Of-The-Valley and Freesias.

Bali Sunrise, New York Nights and Provence Spring are new additions and follow a travel theme that already existed in the early days of the house.

Tuxedo by Ralph Lauren: launched in 1979. Tuxedo was created for women, but the name sometimes seems to throw people into thinking that it is a men's fragrance.

    • 4 oz Spray Cologne

Sometimes a Ralph Lauren handkerchief was sold as part of a gift set with the Tuxedo fragrance.

In 1984, the Tuxedo Delicate Cologne was introduced in both a 1 oz and a 2 oz spray.

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a warm floral chypre fragrance for women.

    • Top notes: aldehydes modified by a green note, bergamot, coriander, lemon, tarragon and ylang-ylang

The Tuxedo Delicate Cologne was housed in a frosted glass cube shaped bottle and topped with a silver cap trimmed in red to match the cute little polo rider symbol on the bottom right hand corner.

    .

    The Washingtonian - Volume 15, 1979:
"Tuxedo...because some things should only be worn at night. This is Ralph Lauren's newest fragrance creation. Designed for the woman who appreciates and understands what evening can bring."

    Country Life, 1980:
"Ralph Lauren's Tuxedo is intended for evening and to complement his Lauren fragrance already on the market. It is named after his his evening tuxedos for women and is what the publicity calls "a p.m. fragrance", whereas "Lauren", his first perfume for women, is fruity, young and modern and definitely "a.m." With both perfumes comes a bathtime collection of dusting powder, body cream, spray cologne and other delights."

The fragrance was reformulated and relaunched by Long Lost Perfumes/Irma Shorell, Inc.

    Replique by Raphael c1936

Réplique (pronounced RAY-PLEEK') was launched in 1936 in France, and in the USA in 1946.

    According to ebay seller hardweejun:
"The story is almost too good to be true, but it is an acknowledged fact: The main "nose" of parfumeur Worth in Grasse had just created "Requête" in 1944 when he had a violent argument with one of the directors and left them in the worst possible terms. He was immediately hired by Raphael and created "Réplique", the reply to a "Requête" in French legalese. It was rumoured that Worth did not enjoy the joke."

Replique was available in parfum, eau de toilette, bath oil, talc, soap and dusting powder.

In 1966, Revlon extended its line of programs by purchasing Parfums Marcy for 26, 136 shares of common stock. Parfums Marcy produced Replique and Plaisir.

    Printer's Ink, 1966:
"The Replique line of perfume, toilet water, bath oil, soap and dusting powder is made by Raphael of France and imported and distributed exclusively in the United States by Parfums Marcy Inc. of New York, which also handles the Plaisir line .."

So what does it smell like? Replique is classified as a floral chypre perfume with strong aldehydic and lemony top notes.
    • Top notes: aldehydes, Italian bergamot, clary sage, coriander, cardamom, Sicilian lemon, neroli, orange.
    • Heart notes: clove bud, Egyptian jasmine, lily of the valley, orris, rose, tuberose, ylang ylang.
    • Base notes: ambergris, civet, leather, oakmoss, musk, patchouli, vetiver and vanilla.

In 2000, Irma Shorell, Inc (Long Lost Perfume) purchased the name Replique and has introduced their version of the fragrance.

    Mademoiselle, 1976:
"Replique by Raphael — as all its devotees know — is flowery, sparkly, vivacious— and even more so now that Revlon has reformulated it... given it a sort of fragrance- lift, you might say . and brought it out in batch of new formats. Including a rich, perfumed body cream."

    House Beautiful, 1977:
"Revlon - Replique burns from a red candle in a large heart-shaped white porcelain box with bold red and blue flowers ($12) or from a pair of smaller heart boxes in the same design ($9.50 the pair). These make marvelous trinket boxes."
