Perfume Bottles Auction 2015

100 Years of Glass Design - Auction 2015

NEW DAY - Saturday, May 2, 2015 - 5:00 pm

This year Ken Leach is is honored to represent a fine selection of bottles and objects by notable glass makers - most recently de-accessioned from an important East coast collection - comprising 300 lots of imaginative stylish glass design spanning 100 years.

A fine grouping of Lalique glass includes: the first complete bottle that Rene Lalique designed for a
perfumer, the 1909 “Cyclamen” for Coty; the 1912 blue glass bee-stoppered “Au Couer des Calices” for Coty; the 1925 figural ashtray created exclusively for Jeanne Lanvin; and the1909 Egyptian inspired “Scarabee” powder box for L.T. Piver sealed with contents in it’s original box.

The collection offers two rarely seen Czech perfume bottles by Heinrich Hoffmann: one in opaque brown crystal and the other in opaque red-orange crystal, both with the highly desirable “hand chiseled” surface. Highlighting the art glass, and many 1800s Palais Royal selections is a green opaline glass and gilt bronze horse drawn carriage.

Presentations from fashion houses include items from Paul Poiret, Schiaparelli, Babani, Lucien Lelong, Hattie Carnegie, and Jean Patou. Standing tall among them is the exceedingly rare 16 inch Christian Dior silk doghouse with figural bottle, created in 1956 to mark 10 years of Dior in New York. Other commercial bottles from the collection include numerous examples in boxes representing a variety of glass makers and perfumers.

Also offered are powder boxes, atomizers, and other unique vanity items.

Galeries Lafayette. This fabulous department store was founded in 1893 and boasts 7 floors of fashionable clothing, perfume, haberdashery, food, and all sorts of other designer and gourmet attractions.

The ground floor houses mostly cosmetics and perfumes, and is quite possibly the largest perfume store in the world! In the early part of the 20th century, many department stores started creating their own in-house perfumes and cosmetics, both in America and in Paris.

Around 1911, they introduced perfumes under their own label. The perfumes Royal Origan, Lafayette, Mai au Bois, La Fenaison and Moia were created for Galerie Lafayette by the famous Francois Coty.

The perfume bottle for  La Feuillaison was made by Rene Lalique.

Finding these original vintage perfumes is tough, I have listed all that I could find. If you know of another, please let me know.

The perfumes of Galeries Lafayette:

  • 1911 La Feuillaison
  • 1919 Chypre
  • 1920 Terre de Rez (face powder)

Boucheron by Boucheron: launched in 1988. Created by Francis Deleamont and Jean Pierre Bethouart.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral oriental fragrance for women.
  • Top notes: bergamot, sour orange, lemon, sweet orange, tangerine, tagetes, apricot, basil, mint, blackcurrant buds absolute, asafoetida
  • Middle notes: geranium, jasmine, lily of the valley, broom, narcissus, orange blossom, tuberose, orris, cedarwood, ylang-ylang
  • Base notes: civet, amber, benzoin, musk, styrax balsam, tonka beans, vanilla, oakmoss, sandalwood.

Bottles:

This ring-shaped flacon that Alain Boucheron designed himself was specially chosen to hold his first perfume that he felt was worthy of a maharanee. The bottle is a design by Joel Desgrippes and depicts a rock crystal ring set with a large sugarloaf sapphire cabochon in a gilded bezel. Known as the "Bague de Boucheron", the Boucheron ring bottle continued to be a popular design over the years and special limited editions were also produced.

The bottles were made by Saint-Gobain Desjonqueres, their marking is the "SGD" you find in the bottom of the bottle.

The vintage oval bottles holding the original version will have a diamond design containing a representation of the Vendome Column,  above the Boucheron name, other vintages have the Boucheron B logo and the Eiffel Tower as one symbol.

  • 1988-1997 -  Vendome Column logo
  • 1997-2004- Eiffel Tower & B logo
  • 2004 - present - Boucheron name with no other logo

The oval bottles came in two sizes: 100ml and 50ml for both the eau de parfum and the eau de toilette. The parfum and the eau de parfum bottles have frosted glass sides, the eau de toilette bottles are unfrosted and of exceptional clarity.

The newer round version of the bottle was introduced around 2004 and features a built in sprayer and houses a reformulated version of the fragrance.

Around 1996, a refillable 75ml eau de parfum canister was presented, known as "Les Pluriels", was a sumptuous case, crafted like a one-of-a-kind piece: golden fluting that seems etched into the gold and sapphire blue cabochon. The refill bottles are simple as shown in the photo above. This bottle was also used for the fragrances Jaipur and Trouble in later years.

Ancillary Products:

The success of the perfume line was followed by a sumptuous bath line as costly as most perfumes of their time. The range was expanded to include shower gel, body lotion, body cream, dusting powder and a special powder compact impregnated with the scent of Boucheron.

Elle, Volume 9, Issues 1-4, 1993:
"This is an instance when you might choose a powder for its case. Renowned jeweler Boucheron's Le Poudrier compact, capped with a sapphire cabochon and set in three golden rings, can be considered an accessory, albeit an expensive one. The powder itself is a universal shade, as transparent as mile. It's pressed with Boucheron fragrance and contains a moisturizer and UVA/UVB filters."

An easy way to tell vintage from new? Using the elongated bottle below, you will notice that the words "Boucheron Eau de Parfum" are directly in the center of the circle of the bottle. The old bottles have the wording set lower, towards the base of the circle and not in the center.

Limited Edition Flacons:

For the 10th anniversary of the launch of Boucheron pour Femme, a limited edition bottle was produced of only 1000 numbered examples. Made up of clear sparkling handmade Baccarat crystal decorated with gold gadroons, it held parfum d'extrait in a half ounce size. It was presented in an elegant jewelry case designed in the Boucheron workshop.

Indianapolis Monthly - Nov 1998:
"If money's no object, you can lay down $950 for half an ounce of Boucheron Baccarat Crystal Parfum."

Officiel de la couture et de la mode de Paris, 1999:
"Ten years of Bague de Boucheron, is also the 140 year history of the jeweler. To celebrate the event, the famous bottle is proposed Baccarat crystal decorated with fluted gilded with fine gold. Only 1000 examples produced and numbered. 15ml extrait d'parfum, 900 Francs."

In 2012, a limited edition bottle was produced for the Christmas season which cloaks the bottle in black. The scent has not changed, only the bottle."Celebrate the holiday season with this special edition of the classic Boucheron Pour Femme Eau de Parfum. With luminous golden finery, the bottle reflects the craftsmanship and know-how of the magical workshops of Place Vendome. 3.3 oz. $136.00"

2013, also brought a new Christmas limited edition also celebrating the scent's 25th Anniversary, the bottle retains its familiar shape but is encased in opaque white topped with a black and gold cap. The scent has not changed, only the bottle. "Christmas in white Boucheron, a tribute to the light ...
In 2013, Boucheron celebrates 25 years of his great feminine and honors the light, the thread creations joaillier. For her, the famous ring bottle is adorned with an immensely bright white dentate gold and topped with a cabochon onyx color.3.3 oz, $136."

Precious Limited Edition Flacons:

L'Express, 1990:
"The precious bottle of Bague de Boucheron, set with 32 diamonds and 4 sapphires, produced only in a very limited series of only 3 examples, 95,000 francs."

Mirabella, 1995:
"And some bottles have inherent value, like Boucheron's Jaipur in a thirty-two-diamond gold-and-crystal bracelet bottle ($30,000) or its eponymous perfume in a ring-shaped gold bottle ($20,000)."

Le Figaro magazine, 1998:
"Boucheron perfume extract ring in its Baccarat crystal bottle and gilding with fine gold limited edition, 15ml, 5,900 Francs."

The Fate of the Fragrance:

Boucheron has been reformulated a couple of times over the years much to the chagrin of its loyal followers. Many of these reformulations were a direct result of the restrictions proposed by IFRA. In 2011, Boucheron signed an exclusive license agreement with Interparfums for the development of their fragrances. The familiar oval bottle was returned to the shelves.

An easy way to tell vintage from new? Using the c2012 elongated bottle below, you will notice that the words "Boucheron Eau de Parfum" are directly in the center of the circle of the bottle. The old bottles have the wording set lower, towards the base of the circle and not in the center.

Parfums Jean d’Albret

The beautiful and romantic Princesse Jeanne d'Albret was the mother of dashing and handsome Henry of Navarre, King Henry IV of France.  She was the inspiration for the name of the Paris perfume house of Jean d'Albret, founded by Comte Guillaume d'Ornano, the creator of Orlane Beauty Preparations in 1946.

Also in 1946, Jean d'Albret released his first fragrance, Ecusson, an aldehydic floral perfume. The name which means "crest" or "coat of arms" proved to be the brands most successful fragrance over the years.

Later he released an eau de cologne simply named Classic, as well as Lavande, an eau de cologne scented with lavender flowers.  The youthful Casaque, named after a woman's short silk jacket, brought even more success to the house, with its blend of flowers and chypre notes. The romantic floral Princesse d'Albret perfume, named after his mother, propelled the house into infamy with a unique wild strawberry top note. A men's fragrance, Messire, which was notable for its coriander and rosewood notes was next on the scene and delighted the hearts of men well into the 1970s.

The fragrances of Jean D'Albret:
  • 1946 Écusson
  • 1948 Lavande
  • 1948 Classic Eau de Cologne
  • 1956 Casaque
  • 1960 Princesse d’Albret
  • 1961 Messire(relaunched in 1996)

In 1973, Jean d'Albret introduced Bodylove, a floral scented bath and body collection. It's scent was a blend of lily of the valley, mimosa, jasmine, carnation and hyacinth.

Mademoiselle, 1973
"THE SCENT SCENE If the name Bodylove touches off a sybaritic fantasy inside your head, imagine what happens when you powder /splash /bathe /smooth and lavish with the real thing. What happens, among other niceties, is that you come up smelling like roses— and hyacinths, carnations, jasmine, mimosa, and lilies of the valley. Because that's what's inside every last luscious item in the line— from the tingly Body Cologne, top, to the Body Buff powder and deep blue Body Bracelet Soap, below, and in between there's body lotion, milk bath, crackling moisturizing foam and bath oil. All brought to you by Jean D'Albret."

By 1977, Jean d'Albret stopped producing perfumes.

What are Chypre Fragrances?

$

0
Fragrances can be classified by certain olfactive families, or themes, or accords.

Chypre: (pronounced shee-pra)

Takes its name from the French name for Cyprus, is the legendary birthplace of Venus, the goddess of love.

Chypre perfumes are based on an accord, or several scents that blend together to create a single soft, warm, and sweet scent. There are two scents that are included in all accords, these would be patchouli and oak moss. Most have gum labdanum which has a sweet honey like note. These perfumes take their name from Coty’s Chypre which debuted in 1917.

A classic chypre perfume might be blended of bergamot, oakmoss, sandalwood, patchouli , labdanum and given a floral note with jasmine and rose.

There are subdivisions of classifications in this family and they are: floral chypre citrus, floral chypre, fruity chypre, green chypre, aromatic chypre, and leather chypre.

Perfumes which are classified as Chypre are:

  • Miss Dior by Christian Dior
  • Femme by Rochas
  • Cabochard by Gres
  • Gianni Versace by Gianni Versace
  • Ysatis by Givenchy
  • Ma Griffe by Carven
  • Paloma Picasso by Paloma Picasso
  • Knowing by Estee Lauder
  • Mitsouko by Guerlain
  • Cristalle by Chanel
  • Givenchy III by Givenchy
  • Crepe de Chine by Millot

Nanette by Lamballe c1940

Nanette by Lamballe: launched in 1940.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? I suppose it would be classified as a floral woody fragrance for women.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, hyacinth, honey
  • Middle notes: rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, lily of the valley, iris
  • Base notes: oakmoss, spices, amber, sandalwood, patchouli, cedar, musk, vetiver

First sniff is very woody, with lots of cedar, sandalwood and patchouli. Reminds me of vintage Magie by Lancome. A haunting floral bouquet of honeyed rose, jasmine, iris and ylang ylang wraps its arms around the wood notes. A wisp of hyacinth and lily of the valley slip in and out, playing hide and seek amongst the other floral notes. Spices pepper their way throughout the composition revealing nutmeg, mace and cloves. Slight animalic notes of musk and amber on oakmoss and vetiver give the perfume a furry, fuzzy note. There is only a trace of sweetness to be found in the drydown from some vanilla or benzoin, but this fragrance is mostly dry, spicy and very woodsy.

Fate of the Fragrance:

Discontinued, probably sometime in the 1960s. Today you may only come across this perfume in a set of miniatures along with Fragonard and Mercoeur like I did.

William H. Brown & Bros (also called Brown & Brothers) perfumery was located in Baltimore, Md.

Their bottles are hard to find and I have named all of those I could find in advertisements of the era, so they may have been originally launched years before. I am sure there are more, so if you know of any, please let me know. I believe their perfume company was established in the mid-1800s.
