Räks by André Barnwell: launched in 1995. The name of the fragrance is pronounced "ROCKS." Created by Givaudan (Roure).

The concept of the name actually does refer to the stones, as in rushing waters over rocks. Rocks to Barnwell symbolized strength, endurance and masculinity. The umlaut in the A was directly inspired by the one used in Chanel's Egoiste fragrance. Instead of simply using the word "Rocks", Barnwell decided on a different spelling and the umlaut made it stand out among other competitor fragrances on the shelf.

Barnwell secured a meeting with Nordstrom's buyer division and struck a deal that his fragrances would be exclusive to Nordstrom.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a crisp citric aromatic fougère fragrance for men.

The fougere family brings a truly classic and timeless appeal to the fragrance theme while the citrus notes add a new dimension. Fougere notes hive its warmth and sensuality with its use of spices and precious woods. A unique modern twist is given by fresh garden sage and brilliant coriander. The top note is wonderfully fresh with notes of neroli, Maltese orange and crisp bergamot.

  • Top notes: bergamot, Maltese orange, neroli
  • Middle notes: lavender, sage, coriander, spices, myrrh
  • Base notes: amber, oakmoss, labdanum, musk, frankincense, sandalwood, vetiver

Bottle:

Räks is a gold-tinted cologne housed in a clear square bottle, with a layer of actual earth-tone rocks sitting at the bottom, that would shake around whenever the bottle is picked up, a very original and eye catching idea.

Fate of the Fragrance:

Discontinued and hard to find. Still sold in 2002.
