Enigma by Alexa c1931

Enigma by Alexa (Alexandra de Markoff): launched in 1931, some other sources state it was launched in 1944, production may have been stalled during WWII and reintroduced later.




It was available in the following:
  • 2 oz Extrait de Parfum
  • 12 oz Cologne Concentree

Fragrance Composition:


So what does it smell like? It is classified as a woody oriental chypre fragrance for women. Patchouli dominant composition - semi-oriental.
  • Top notes: green aldehydes, bergamot, coriander
  • Middle notes: pimento, herbs, jasmine, rose, carnation
  • Base notes: amber, woods, spices, patchouli, musk and oakmoss

Tricolor, 1944:
"Teasing and mysterious. What woman wouldn't covet that description? A dash of Alexa's "Enigma' has the power to make you the tantalizing female you'd like to be. "Enigma" is offered in two strengths— the Extrait de Parfum, a pure perfume extract, and a light perfume— in several sizes. New and nose-catching!" "


The New Yorker - Volume 22, 1946:
 "Alexa: If you're looking for a mild and delicate floral, Tiara is your dish. Enigma is a musky, Oriental business."


Harper's Bazaar, 1946:
"Alexa's "Enigma," mysterious and charming. 2 oz., $30."

Bottles:







Drug and Cosmetic Catalog, 1931:
"Alexa's Enigma perfume was dramatically packaged in a shiny black bottle with white design and retailed at $15 for six drams."


Fate of the Fragrance:


It was discontinued and reintroduced in 1972.


So what does it smell like? It is classified as an oriental fragrance for women. It begins with a fresh top, followed by an exotic floral heart, resting on a sweet powdery base.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, bergamot, coriander, rosewood, lemon
  • Middle notes:  jasmine, rose, carnation, orris, ylang ylang, orchid
  • Base notes: amber, patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, vetiver, incense, civet, benzoin

It is currently discontinued.
